It is pirating and therefore illegal. It is also pretty immoral. You wouldn’t walk out of the store with an album on a CD, would you? If the music is indeed copy written and you can purchase it off Amazon MP3 or iTunes, then you’re definitely in the wrong and are ripping off the people who make the music. I personally don’t care for the massive record and publishing companies, because they’re part of the pirating problem (they should make music easier to get on all your devices without worrying about people copying their music and reselling it illegally), but at least some small percentage of that $ 0.99 or $ 1.29 makes it to the artist or the musicians or the studio crew. It’s also a vicious cycle—people pirate, music companies lose money and spend millions trying to prevent it, and then people who actually buy their music suffer because it’s not available for cheap on iTunes anymore or the music company removed it off of services like Spotify. The same thing goes for the television and movie industry—only those guys are a lot worse with the DRM prevention and stuff they do. CBS removed a ton of its popular TV shows off their website, so now you can’t watch them. I wonder, CBS—would that make your viewers more or less likely to pirate TV shows? Because now they have to wait for the DVD or pay for the show instead of watch it online, for free, but with ads—just like actual broadcast TV.
In short, don’t do it. Everyone loses, pretty much. The artist doesn’t get paid, customers get a harder time if they want to actually buy the content, and the huge companies retaliate and make everyone angry. It seems that the only person who benefits is the pirate, but who wants a low-quality video or song anyway? One that may come with viruses?
