  1. I would suggest ubuntu server 8.10 as it can take advantage of cloud computing.

    It has some great integration tools with amazon (AWS) and it will constantly get updates.

    While it is exciting to host your own server, it is a difficult task, since you need to take care of a lot of issues like power, backup and maintenance.

    You can host your domain, just for kicks. I am a linux geek too, I hang out at the terminal all the time. I still host at external servers.
