both Avast and AVG WERE the best back like 3-5 years ago. Now they’re not so great. The best free AVs are Microsoft’s Security Essentials and Avira. I recommend the first one since it’s supported by Microsoft itself and Avira occasionally pops up nag screens about buying their software. At least it used to 4 years ago when I was using it.

Best and Trusted Free Anti Virus programs on the market are:
Note: If you use more than one secondary antivirus program, make sure you’re only running one at a time. If these programs ever ask you if you would like to turn on active protection, as many of them will do, click “No.”
If you want free then I recommend Avast , superantispyware and Malwarebytes. coupled with Comodo firewall They are all free for personal use . It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly.

I’d suggest Avira free edition, i’s easy to use and reliable antivirus program.
Go to http://download.cnet.com/windows/ and download AVG Anti Virus. It’s free and works great.
