  1. Modem is a device that stands for Modulator / Demodulator which process analog to digital and vice versa. It is required to the connected to a telephone line unless your ISP has the wireless options such as the 3G modem, 4G LTE modems, and Wimax.

  2. There are a few options. I’m assuming you’re using DSL? You want to make sure the phone line between the modem and jack is short or it will mess up DSL. If you need to run a cord, do it with a long LAN/CAT5/”ethernet” cable from the router to your PC. or if you have a separate modem hooked to a router (i think a lot of companys provide a 2 in 1 modem router now) you can have the long LAN cable between the modem and the router.
Your ISP should be able to make you a long cable for free or much less than buying it in a store.

If you order a 2nd DSL like, it will be a new phyical line going into your house. If this is the case, you will need inside wiring down to hook it to an existing or new jack (for your room!). See if your ISP will do this for you too. I know ours charged for this extra work.
