  2. Until Chrome OS comes out I don’t see it. I don’t like the terms of service that many of these companies require for you to agree to use their service where they are usually allowed to share your information with certain advertisers or that they own it. Nothing in life is free.

There are sites that provide small quantities of online storage for free and you pay extra for more speed or storage size. Most people would be better off to find someone they trust that lives in another state or country, where each of you will setup a server that each of you can remotely back your information too so disasters in one area won’t cause you to lose your important documents like family photos, videos, and legal papers. The storage should support some form of encryption so both parties information won’t get compromised in the event of a theft and both parties should also do a backup on site as well.

This won’t be free short term but the cost for it is measured in investment of time, knowledge, and gear makes it more cost effective. There are many ways to do this like using an older computer, add hard drives to it, and put some form of linux server software like freenas, ubuntu, centos, or fedora on it or use some form of cloud based OS blend like tonido or jolicloud. There are products you can buy that incorporates much of this onto it like some of the nas or windows home server so you’ll need to weigh if much of this is worth it for you or not.
