  4. Excel is a program that you use to create spreadsheets, but not all spreadsheets are created in Excel. Excel has basically become synonymous with spreadsheets. Excel is a software product and part of the Office suite sold by Microsoft. There are several different programs that make spreadsheets. The Apple product is called “Numbers”. Sun Microsystems (now Oracle) offers a free set of “office” type products, called Open Office. The link is below. Google also offers a product called “Google Docs” that stores all your information, including any spreadsheets, in the “cloud”. The Google product is free as well. All these products will, for the most part, work with each other. That is, if you make a spreadsheet in Excel, you can import it into Open Office and use the same sheet.

    There are other spreadsheet applications, such as Apple Numbers, Gnumeric, Calc, Lotus Symphony. But Excel, developed and marketed by Microsoft, is now by far the most popular and successful piece of spreadsheet software.
