Sign up with a cloud storage provider which provides folder synchronizing.
Then setup the client to synch with your whole external hard drive.
Just bear in mind that a lot of the FREE cloud storage only gives you 2GB, 5GB or 10GB max of storage.
I use Skydrive from Microsoft, installed the Live Mesh client on my computer and have it synchronizing with important folders on my computer and external hard drive. However, Skydrive doesn’t have an iPhone client though.
However, I’ve been testing our CX instead which gives you 10GBs of FREE storage (more details here: http://thisishelpful.com/10gbs-free-online-storage.html ) and they have an iPhone client so check it out (I don’t have an iPhone so can’t tell you about it).
