  1. Typically you’ll have a dedicated device running. For a small network, this could be a NAS (network attached storage). Large corporate networks often have large, expandable systems that include features like compression and deduplication. Depending on the system, it may come with software.

For a small network, it could be configured to have each server handle it’s own backups or you could have a dedicated server running software that connects to each system and handles backups. The type of software would depend on the applications running. The database server might just have a command-line tool that dumps the database connect to it. Certain database software has built in backup features.

You also have to determine the data backup needs. If you just want to create a copy of everything once a week, you just need a storage device like a NAS and each server can store data on it. If you want it continuously backed up with file revisions, you may need a more complex system. Windows Server has Shadow Copies that automatically create a backup when files change.

Additionally, you’ll want some sort of offsite backup. You could rent space from another company and store backup servers there (colocation), use an online storage service (like Amazon S3), or have backups in another physical location owned by the company. The offsite backups may only be weekly whereas onsite backups are daily or continuous.

You need to figure out how frequently backups should be taken. To find this, determine how much data is created/changed and how long and costly it would be to recreate this data if lost. Less important data has cheaper requirements. Security will also dictate what options you can choose from. Financial, confidential, and costumer data should be encrypted so you’ll need a system that can handle this. Additionally, using a cloud storage provider for offsite backups may not be an option or a costlier secure system may be in order. For offsite backup frequency you also need to take internet connections into account and determine if current infrastructure can handle the data requirements.

For a big company, vendors like Dell, HP, EMC, and IBM can provide full solutions designed specifically for your needs. To find out more, you have to contact the companies for a consultation.

  2. Server colocation is a one kinds of hosting opinion for small businesses. There are wide range of hosting opinion but i think colocation is good of all. It make better infinity.
