Yes, this takes more than just one software.
1.) Tracking – You would need a good tracking software to track your footage in 3D space. What this does is that when you put your 3D objects into your footage, it doesn’t just float around but actually moves with the footage, like having an object run along the ground. Of course, if your whole footage is motionless and just a still footage, this won’t be necessary, but it will be boring. If your camera has too much motion blur, it will be really hard to track this stuff.
– Good programs for this are Boujou or PFTrack, BUT the price for this is ridiculous (you can probably find it free somewhere online though……….)
2.) 3D modeling – These programs makes the 3D models and animations. This is a new skill to have as well when wanting to do these kind of things. What you do is import the tracking data from the above program and import it into this here, so that you can animate and model your 3D objects on the correct plane.
– Programs like Maya, Cinema 4D, and 3DS Max would get the job done.
3.) Video Editor – Finally you import the 3D modeling file and sync it up with your footage
– Programs like Adobe After Effects, or any other film editor that is similar
Basically it takes more than one person with different skill set to make a movie, but even amateurs can do it too. There are a lot of people on YouTube that puts these together and they are amazing at it.
