It used to be somewhat adequate, but its on-demand scanning was always very slow. These days it’s far from the top.
If you’re looking for a free solution, Microsoft Security Essentials is well worth a look. It’s got cloud scanning and picks up about half the malware samples I’ve encountered at work. Admittedly this is not a terribly high detection rate, but for a brand new free product it’s not bad, and it is gradually getting better.
