Getting Started with Amazon SNS

  1. nice video and content.
    Can aws alerts on an EC2 instance, or RDS instance be auto updated as message to a topic, and notifications sent to all subscribers?

  2. Amazon Videos never really show you how to apply and USE these things. Its almost as bad a Facebook Development instructions… they say a whole lot, but tell you very little. After watching this entire video… I still do not know how to use this outside of Amazon… like, how to create an application in PHP so people can subscribe to topics I have created. That would be a great video!

  3. umm…AWESOME

  4. sweet

  5. What do you use your kindle for currently, just book reading? If so I would say no.

    The Fire is nice but there are actually other tablets out there that offer more. Just off the top of my head the Vizio tablet is 8″ and comes with a camera for the same price – which the kindle fire does not.

    Best bet is to make a checklist of what you really need in a tablet and cross reference it across the tablets you are interested in.

  7. Hi, Sadie, Kindle Touch or Nook Simpletouch are e-Ink devices for reading and not video/web/apps while Kindle Fire or Nook Color are LCD screen devices for video/web/apps but not too much for reading. Pick which screen and functionality you need but consider my points below before you make a decision.
    Before you think of getting a Kindle Fire, here’s some limitations of it that you need to consider:
    – Kindle Fire doesn’t have microSD slot that, for example, Nook Color has thus it is stuck with 6 GB usable internal storage unlike Nook Color that can get up to 32 GB card in. Kindles are made to make sure you’re tied up to Amazon’s storage on the web (for which you need Wi-Fi connection to get to) and you can only store content you get from Amazon there, not other files. Quoting Amazon on Kindle Fire: “Free cloud storage for all Amazon content”. Get it, Amazon content?
    – The stats of how long the battery can last (Kindle Fire theory is 7.5 hours) are taken with Wi-Fi off. It will last only about 3 hours if you use it to access content from their Cloud storage over Wi-Fi.
    – Amazon can spy on your web activity through their new cloud-integrated web browser of Kindle Fire.
    – lack of microSD slot means that if you decide to root your Kindle Fire, you’ll have to root the actual device thus there will be no coming back. On Nook Color, you can make it boot from a “rooted” microSD card and if you want to get back to the original Nook you can just take out the card and reboot.
    – Kindle Fire doesn’t have a camera.
    – Kindle Fire has about 70% less usable screen area than iPad 2.
    – Kindle doesn’t support eBooks in ePub format that is the most used format in the world.
    – Kindle app store contains only Amazon approved apps and it does not include (and will not include) Netflix app that iPad has and Nook Color is getting thus again you’re stuck with Amazon content only.
    – Amazon confirmed that you cannot download/stream anything to Kindle Fire when traveling outside US.
    – Amazon says it will review every app in its Appstore for Fire compatibility, as part of an automated process. Rejected apps will include those that rely on a gyroscope, camera, WAN module, Bluetooth, microphone, GPS, or micro SD. Apps are also forbidden from using Google’s Mobile Services (and in-app billing), which, if included, will have to be “gracefully” removed. In terms of actual content, Amazon has outlawed all apps that change the tablet’s UI in any way (including theme- or wallpaper-based tools), as well as any that demand root access.
    – I’d recommend waiting for Nook Color 2 that is rumored to be released by Barnes & Noble on November 7..

  8. They are not harsh on eyes, They are mostly like the LCD screens you use in front of you eyes everyday. But you wont be able to get it to read it in daylight as they do not use E-ink in kindle fire.
    Yes they only come in 8Gb version for that they have made an extra storage on amazon cloud where you can store most of your data which you buy from amazon, so that wont take up space in your kindle.
    Here are some other features:

    -> 7″ IPS color screen. This is a very good screen with 1024 by 600 pixel resolution and 169 ppi pixel density. It also has two finger multi-touch and an anti-reflective treatment.
    ->Lots and lots of content – lots of magazines, over 100K movies and TV shows, lots of Android Apps, over 1,000 children’s illustrated books, around 1 million books from the Kindle Store.
    ->Quite Light at 14.6 ounces (413 grams). Pretty compact – 7.5″ x 4.7″ x 0.45″ (190 mm x 120 mm x 11.4 mm). Makes it easy to hold in one hand (though probably not for long) and easy to carry around.
    ->Very good value for money. Some analysts are even claiming that Amazon is losing $ 50 per Kindle Fire sold.
    ->A pretty powerful dual-core processor from Texas Instruments.
    ->The user interface, based on everything we have seen so far, is fast and simple and easy to use.
    ->Gorilla Glass display means more durability and less scrapes and scratches.
    ->Built-in Browser that will let you access Facebook, Twitter, and other sites. There is support for Flash too.
    ->Built-in Email App.
    ->WhisperSync (automatic syncing across devices) now extends from Kindle Fire to Kindles and TVs. The point at which you stopped reading a book or stopped watching a movie is synced across devices.
    ->Kindle Fire is better for Children’s Books and Textbooks than the Kindle. Mostly due to touch and color.
    ->There’s a USB port. You can transfer files from your PC or Mac to the Kindle Fire. You can also charge is via USB.
    ->You could stretch it and say a free month of Amazon Prime is a benefit.

    But there are some cons as well:
    -> No camera
    -> No microSD, so you are probably stuck with 8Gb and amazon cloud.
    -> No microphone

  9. It’s the first tablet under $ 249 worth buying. It’s a better tablet than the Nook Color, and it’s 25% less expensive. It will complement your E Ink Kindle well as it’s great at the things your current Kindle is poor at: web browsing, apps, games, video, and music. For reading, it’s as good as a computer monitor display, but not as good as your current Kindle.

    Advantages of Kindle Fire:
    1. Its unique cloud-accelerated “split browser” is optimized for web browsing and multi-media, which are the best functions of tablets.
    2. 7-inch display is very easy to handle and is highly portable.
    3. Its $ 199 price is very low relative to other tablets.

    Disadvantages of Kindle Fire:
    1. No cameras; no SD cards.
    2. 7-inch display shows smaller views of documents and movies than 10-inch displays do.
    3. It’s not running the latest version of Android.

    It looks good overall, but it’s up to you to weigh the relative importance of those factors.

    Reasons to order a Kindle Fire now:
    1. You’ll be in line ahead of others should supply not meet demand.
    2. You know you want it for sure and don’t want to think about the decision any more.

    Reasons to order a Kindle Fire after release:
    1. Problems could manifest in the Kindle Fire once it starts shipping.
    2. Another product might be released which you’d like more.

    All things considered, given Amazon’s excellent track record with Kindles, I don’t think there’s much risk in going ahead and pre-ordering the new Kindle Fire now.
