After updating select the “Immunize” icon, click on the green + to immunize your system. This will help prevent any new spyware/malware infestation by blocking new items. THIS MUST BE REDONE AFTER EVERY UPDATE SO THAT YOU ARE PROTECTED AGAINST THE LATEST THREATS.
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
After updating go to the main screen click the “Scan now” button, this will take you to a screen that says “Select a scan mode:”, select “Customize” and check “Scan within archives” then “Proceed”. Then select “Select” and check all of your drives, “Scan volume for ADS” should be checked now. Now just select “Next”.
Ad-aware should now be scanning ALL of your drives for any know spyware/malware in its database. Once it has finished scanning it will give you list of everything that it found, REMOVE ALL THAT IT FINDS. Place your cursor on the list of items it finds and right click with your mouse and choose “select all” then click “remove selected items”. This will remove all spyware/malware from your pc. If Ad-aware prompts you to scan on your next reboot you should do so, this may happen because some spyware/malware is in use during the scan and could not be removed properly, Ad-aware will then schedule a boot time scan and remove these items on your next reboot.

The one thing to remember about spyware removers is that they all do something different. Unfortunately, spyware and malware changes so quickly that there’s really not a single application that can do it all for you. You may have to try more than one.
There’s one thing that you should know, however. There are plenty of FREE spyware removers available. Get one of those before you throw down your hard earned money to buy one. Paying for a spyware remover should be a last resort with so many good free removers on the market. A lot of times, a free package will do the job with you having to come out of pocket.
You can find some more information on spyware and spyware removers, as well as some free spyware remover downloads on this page:
now microsoft had offer window defender for window xp
Sounds more like adware to me.
Lavasoft’s Ad-Aware is my favorite. It should take care of any popups
For spyware I recommend Spybot Search and Destroy.
These are both free to use and, i think at least, they do a good job.
