File Cloud Storage Options

  1. I have two Chromebooks and I love them. Keep all your files and apps on servers in the clouds. Chromebook only is a browser –the Chrome browser. The Chromebook hardware is SSD –so incredibly Fast opening and page loading. Just internet and browser –and none of the huge rest of the crap you don’t want or use.

So I archive and edit with Gmail, Google Docs, Google Music, Google Picasa for precious family pics and videos. You might simply upload your Word docs and Presentations to Google Docs. Edit there then return those files to wherever they came to you from. Here is your test –try to only use your browser for a week. See if you are cool with that. You know –most big apps now have some kind of web app HTML5 –as well. And will get much better in the future. Try h5note.com for a little web app note taker. Go to Chromebooks.com and take in the videos.

  2. You can cloud compute from any computer really. Chrome OS, thanks to the Linux kernel it’s built upon and the Solid State Drive, has a quick boot from cold and instant resume.

There are two version of Chromebooks WiFi only or 3G/WiFi models. Depending on if you are able to tether or your access to WiFi, the 3G version would be advantageous if you’re needing to get online in “odd” places. The 3G version come with 100 mb of free data, in the US, a month through Verizon wireless and you can purchase more, as you go, if you’d like. You can also use a sim card in the 3G versions.

For editing Work and Excel files you can use Google Docs or Microsoft SkyDrive. I personally have no experience with SkyDrive, Microsoft also has Office365, but I believe that option is a premium service.

The cost of Chromebooks are a few things. First some of the tech used in the Chromebook is fairly new or expensive at this time like the SSD hard drive. The security is built into the Chromebook is also figured into the cost, instead of having to purchase/installing antivirus and maleware protection you already have the verified boot in place and the sandboxed tabs.
