CloudStack Versus OpenStack Versus Eucalyptus: Lightning Strikes the IaaS Private Cloud

  1. Eucalyptus does indeed offer a client web UI that is separate from the
admin UI and does indeed manage the VMs, EIPs, etc. In addition it has the
intention of remaining 100% CLI compatible, not copying AWS.

  2. In my opinion CloudStack would be the easiest and least complex, and there
    are many tutorials.

  3. I’m thorn between the different platform to use for my final year project
    at college…starting soon 🙂

  4. useful summary comparing tools for a private cloud solution for
    infrastructure as a service (Iaas)

  5. Nice overview of the competing platforms. A little disconcerting that the
speaker avoids calling out the actual benefit of Eucalyptus’ similar to
AWS. @24:29 for example, the speaker demonstrates how the CLI for AWS and
Euca are nearly identical. The derisive “clone” comment avoids the fact
that this mades it easier for customers. In fact the euca2ools can manage
BOTH Euca & AWS so admin scripts need only change target cloud.

  6. Yes a load balancer can give you HA but not all do. So many dump round
robin do not good way tracking the stuff that passing traffic to. Load
balancing do solve the issues. When the node that is running the nova falls
over even if you have more then one node running and one of them fall over
how does the reminding know that the task from died one got done.

  7. To bad the speaker did not understand OpenStack HA model, where you use
load balancing instead of HA-pairs. Load balancing obviously can deal with
failures, but can also scale much, much further. How else do you think HP,
RackSpace, IBM and so on can build public clouds on OpenStack.

  9. If you have no files bigger than 200MB then you can use SkyDrive:
    https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=9976911bede36c46

It only needs a Windows Live account (free BTW) and you’ll get a 25GB online storage to back up your files. If you have files bigger than 200MB then you may spit them or compress them using Winzip, WinRAR or 7-zip to make them smaller.

  10. If you want safe and secure backup online then go for
http://www.drivehq.com (Shell and FTP access allow)
    http://www.opendrive.com

    Both are amazing.

  13. Skydrive will NOT give you 25GBs of online storage to backup your files as what SimpleRED said. They only give you 5GBs. 25GBs is the TOTAL storage (which is a combination of emails from Live or Hotmail along with other services from Live). I know because I use this myself.

Skydrive and Amazon Cloud Drive both give you 5GB free.
    Mozy gives you 2GB free.

But recently I found another site, CX that gives you 10GBs free. More details here: http://thisishelpful.com/10gbs-free-online-storage.html – I’m using it now and it seems to work fine and can’t complain on 10GBs for free.

    Hope that answers your question.
