I haven’t had a problem with NOD32 yet. AVG is good but I don’t recommend since its parent company is Russian owned and they use AVG to spy or collect sensitive information. McAfee is great and highly recommended. Some government employees will use Symantec although you really need an tech support when something goes wrong.

When I got my new desk top, I bought online Norton, it works really good Its worth the money, and you can get a free one as well. AVG.com and it free.

If you are bound and determined to have “the best” from current line up, which inevitably will change next week when the new updates are issued, as these things change month to month, then go with Webroot AntiVirus with Spysweeper 2011.
It scored 4.5/5 by PC Magazine, the highest rating of any AntiVirus it gave out for this year so far.
Also, to clarify the other answers… AVG Technologies is not a subsidiary of any company, and is not based in Russia. It is based in the Czech Republic. The majority share holder of AVG Technologies is none other than Intel Capital and Enterprise Investors, which is the investment branch of Intel .. based in California.

use either Avast 5! free + Comodo Firewall
never had any issues with the free Avast antivirus
if you want paid, try Avast! 5 pay to use suite
or Eset Smart Security

Paid AV is not necessarily better. Microsoft Security Essentials, Panda Cloud and Avira are all very good free AVs and these three actually work together well (yes, on the same machine – those saying never use more than one should not be sought for advice on anything). I can’t think of a reason to use anything else or pay for AV unless you’re in a corporate environment.

If you want a free one, the BEST popular antivirus is definitely Avast 5 Home Edition, no doubt about it.
Don’t get AVG, it’s not as good as Avast, but it’s obviously better than nothing.
Buuuut, if you want a paid one, then ESET NOD32 ALL THE WAY!!
Trust me, you’d like it much better than BitDefender or Kaspersky.
Oh and one more thing, don’t get Norton or McAfee.
EDIT:
And yes the government DOES use NOD32. My dad works for the government and he has a remote desktop set up to this crazy government server that was fast as hell. So, yeah I recommend it and the government recommends it 🙂
