Just to ask a really simple question, followed by what might be a dumb one.
You Can not plug this drive into the computer using the usb cable, and have
it register as a removable storage device?
Unless I am wanting to much around, there is no “reasonable” way to
tirectly transfer files from the computer to the drive without the network?
Any Idea why they would forego the ability to use it as a storage device?

Hi Lon Seidman,
You have explained very well about wd my cloud. I have a small query if you
can help me in this.
I have just bought a my cloud 4tb few days back, everything was working
find on the drive, until I tried to put a wd elements usb 3.0 drive
attached to the my cloud so that I can copy and paste data from elements to
cloud. Bus as and when I connects usb drive with cloud it goes damn slow to
operate and after a few minutes of usage it completely hangs and I have to
restart the drive but the same thing happens again. Do you have any Idea
what is the problem?
I am using windows 7 64 bit and cloud with static ip address.
Thanks & Regards

Lon,
I just purchased a 6TB myCloud and tried transferring several TB of
relatively small files to the drive over my GB Ethernet. The transfer kept
failing part way through and I had to restart the transfer after some
cleanup. I finally decided USB would be less likely to fail so I followed
your excellent tutorial and transferred 560GB from my WD MyPassport Slim to
the myCloud drive. It took over 8hrs, but the transfer went smoothly.
One post note I would add to your tutorial is to be sure to unmount the USB
drive from myCloud using the WDMyCloudDashboard before you unplug it. If
you don’t the USB drive may not mount the next time you plug it in to the
myCloud.
Thanks, and keep up the good work.

I just purchased the WD My Cloud 2TB and I am kind of stuck on setting up
the “safepoints”. I’ve clicked on the tab for the safepoints and it then
scans and asks where I want it. I click on where I want it and it then
askes for the User Name and Password…this is where I am lost. I am not
sure which user name and password…for the location of where I want to put
it or for the My Cloud?? Doesn’t matter it keeps saying that the user name
and password are incorrect. Can you help?

Lon, I used USB/SSH to transfer my iPhoto Libraries from my Seagate 3TB to
WD MyCloud, but I’m getting “Input/output error” on almost all the files.
The directory structures is created but all the photos (such as JPEGs) are
all size 0. Any clue?

When transfering files via Shell, it should be noted that you must pay
attention to the ownership and access rights of the files. I found I could
not access files on non-public shares. When looking at the ownership, it
stated for instance “nobody:share”, with Read, Write and eXecute (RWX)
access for Owner and Group, but no access for public. Others had for
instance “root:root” with RWX for root, and its group. But the share could
not be accessed from windows. So I could not open or write to those
directories. I had to fix this by changing ownership and group access flags:
Change ownership with: chown -Rv [path] [owner:group]
–example: chown -Rv root:share /shares/myFiles
Change permissions with: chmod Rv xyz [path] – where x are the access flags
for the owner, y for the group, z for everyone
–example: chmod -Rv 770 /shares/myFiles
gives RWX access to root and the share group, but not to public. Set last
part to 777 to give public access as well.
-R option is to apply the change recursively. -v is for verbose mode so you
can see the progress.

I have some information which I want to share with people watching this
video. I’ll try to be brief. If you have a large amount of files you want
to upload and internet is too slow, or got stuck somewhere, read this:
You CAN connect the WD my cloud directly to the computer, transfer files
using the regular file explorer and get very fast speeds. You can do it
over an ethernet cable. I’ve only tested it on windows 7:
-go to your mycloud dashboard
-go to networking and change the ip to “static”
-put in an ip outside router range, for example 10.0.0.1
then
-on your pc go to control panel, networking, change adapter settings
-right click local area connection (the one you usually use when connected
to the internet) and go to properties
– double click internet protocol version 4 and change ip to 10.0.0.1 (the
same one you used before)
-connect the mycloud and pc through the ethernet ports(internet). go to my
computer and right click Network. it’s located on the left hand side. then
choose map network drive, and put in 10.0.0.1yourusernamehere
you can now browse and transfer files from mycloud and pc with the maximum
speeds allowed by your hard disks.
So, in short: change both the pc’s network adapter and mycloud’s ip address
to the same ip. Then, add the mycloud through map network drive.
This is what I did a year ago when I was confused about the whole thing and
my network wasn’t set up properly yet. I hope this quick fix helps in an
emergency!

Thanks man… this video was helpful and was the starting point in tweaking
up my WD My cloud drive!
From SSH console (using PuTTY for windows) I turned off WD indexing and
thumbnailing programs… real pieces of s***t softwares that screws-up the
entire Net drive capability when you have a lot of files !
From now on, when moving large amount of data on the WD My Cloud, your
procedure will be my bible!
Have a nice day!

Nice video! Personally the quickest way is just to enter the folders by
Windows Explorer. Just type in //ipaddressofthewdmycloud/ in the address
bar and you can copy, move, delete files with some easy copy and paste work
from your pc.

Hello Lon, very nice reviews;
WD My Cloud is very interesting and full of features, I tried many times to
connect my external HD to my Cloud; it works but it is not stable; the
attached Drive not always appeared as plugged and in the folder list; and
sometimes it is required me to reboot several times and at the end it is
not stable too.
Is this related to my external HD format, which is the preferred format.

Hi Lon, I have a 3 tb wd my cloud and i wanted to transfer 500 gb worth of
data from my wd 2tb usb 3.0 external hard drive. When i do the transfer it
shows me the uploading uploading data to cloud!! Now my question is that is
it going to use up my ISP internet gigabites which i get each month or is
it uploading internally in the network and not using my gigs!!! Thanks a

This might be a very simple question but is there a way configure the
wd mycloud device to read like a USB when plugged in and have access to all
the files just as a regular usb hard drive?

Hey Lon, excellent video! I just tested at home and worked fine!
I also bought a 4TB WD MyCloud to my father-in-law and everything was
working just fine when I changed the appliance language to Brazilian
Portuguese. When it rebooted I got stuck on “Authenticating” and I couldn’t
access the dashboard anymore. I tried several resets with a paper clip but
no success. Do you have any idea how to full restore factory default
settings when you don’t have access to the dashboard?!
Thank you!

Have you heard the command time …. It just do that for for you , no need
to count the time to copy a file just do it as this:
WDMyCloud:~# time cp /root/infoImac.txt /tmp/
real 0m0.150s
user 0m0.000s
sys 0m0.030s

Hi Lon. Great videos. Keep ’em coming. I had a question. I know you can
access the drive remotely through your mobile device for instance. Does
that have to be on the same network? If not, can I download something onto
my phone when I’m not at home, through LTE maybe?

Hi! quick question… will it work to connect the WD My Cloud directly to
the computer using the rear USB 3 port to a USB 3 port on the laptop?
cheers!
Federico Zammito March 7, 2015
Thanks!
But it DOES NOT WORK ON (MY) MAC: when I plug my USB key on the MyCloud
disk, I can not see it as you do in your video, within the MyCloud
software! How did you make it work, is it supposed to work by itslef?
Also it is NOT SUPPOSED TO WORK ON MAC, accordingly to WD client support
(this morning the phone hotline guy told and confirmed me 3 times that it
is impossible to transfer from USB drive to MyCloud drive through Mac).
Was he ignorant, is it kind of blocked for non-advanced users or did you
use magic?

it’s possible to able “ipkg” on it install Transmisson or compile packages
