Backup to an external HDD, but store it off-site in a fireproof/floodproof safe.
Also, you can setup a server off-site in a secure location and backup remotely to that, this is a long-term solution that you could manage yourself and the overall cost incurred will pay for itself within a few years vs using an online backup .com such as carbonite or barracuda.
In any case, theres no way you can complete the task for free of charge.
