  1. Yes. eReaders can do both.

I posted a comparison of the Kindle models here:

    http://simplifymychoices.com/comparing-kindle-kindle-touch-kindle-keyboard-and-kindle-fire-ebook-readers/

The reason I like the Kindle Touch for reading is the E Ink display, which is very readable in daylight. Laptop displays are better in low light conditions. And the Kindle touch is much less than an iPad or laptop. If you want to do more than reading though – streaming video, browsing, etc., check out the Kindle Fire. Both Kindles are the top sellers at Amazon.

I use Amazon Prime and love it. In addition to the free two day shipping, you get instant streaming of more than 10,000 movies and TV shows and access to borrow a Kindle book every month, including New York Times Bestsellers, with no due dates.

  2. E ink e readers are best for novels, the nook tablet and kindle fire are better if your going to be taking notes and highlighting passages. The nook simple touch or the kindle black and white devices are just for reading novels. You can read pdf and word documents on each but it is not a good process and they will not be enjoyable experiences.

I would definitely advise you to pay the extra and get the fire or nook tablet. They will definitely suite you better for your needs.

I tell people if they are going to be using amazon to buy their content, their music, their movies and books and add them through there you should stick with the fire, the nook doesn’t have movies for sale and you can’t buy music from the B&N online store for your nook tablet.

If you are going to be adding most of your movies or music from your personal computer and don’t care too much about buying it from a major online store then the nook tablet is better because it comes with more memory and you can expand the memory with an sd card.

So Fire if you plan on buying your stuff from amazon like music and movies and books, Nook if you have music and movies on your computer and just want to move the stuff over and buy only books and magazines from the online store.

As for the online stuff and speed they both match up pretty well. You can see some speed tests online between the two and yeah maybe one second difference between the two, but you won’t notice it when your using it in your everyday.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

  3. Hi, Maggie, you can take notes and bookmark the pages on Kindles or Nooks or tablets that run their apps. As a student you should understand that neither Nook nor Kindle handle eTextbooks well however Barnes and Noble has something for a regular PC or MAC including a laptop or a desktop. An eTextbook is a digital, downloadable, version of a physical textbook. It can be read on your PC and Mac with B&N’s free NOOKstudy application. An eTextbook will look exactly like the physical version so you will see the same graphs, charts, drawings etc. The best part is that you can read your eTextbook anywhere that you bring your computer without needing the internet. And, you have the option to purchase or rent it depending on your needs.
About eReaders – E-Ink Nook Simple Touch from Barnes & Noble at $ 99 (without ads) has twice the battery life of Kindle ($ 139 without ads), faster page turns than Kindle, and microSD card slot to expand capacity that neither Kindle has. With Nook you can checkout eBooks from public libraries – just need to get Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) software (free from Adobe site). Also it’s worth mentioning that if you walk in with any Nook to Barnes & Noble store, you’ll get tech support and you’re allowed to read ANY available eBook for free while in the store via free provided in the store Wi-Fi where Nook eBook store has over 2 million of paid books and about the same number of free public domain books. Nook already has Cloud as your ebooks are stored in your online library as well as downloaded to your device. Nook Simple Touch actually has a hidden web browser – just press the virtual “Search” button at the bottom of your Nook’s screen and key a URL into the search bar when it comes up. Per Consumer Reports, CNET, PCWORLD, etc. pro reviews Nook Touch is the best ereader on the market.
