  1. Thanks for the tutorial
    you need to install gnome

  2. This just worked from a fresh AMI of Ubuntu Server 13.04 [cloud-images.ubuntu.com/raring/current/] with the fresh install sudo apt-get install gnome recommended by Geoff Griffith. Thank you for the direction.

  3. Thank you for the video – when I try this though I only end up with a grey screen with 3 checkboxes on how to handle clipboard objects – no ubuntu gui. Any advice?

  4. can you have a gui access to the amazon linux ami ?

  5. one question…you are chosing AMI named lucid. Does it mean that you can picking the AMI which has older Ubuntu version that 10.04 instead of Ubuntu 12.04 …not sure if AWS now has 12.10 which over linux kernel 3.5

  6. Simple and awesome..!!

  8. This video was super handy! However, on Amazon AWS “Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS”, I had to also install gnome. Be sure to use the following command to install gnome, after running the command “sudo apt-get update”:

    sudo apt-get install gnome

  9. Great guide. One tip: you can add the vnc command (vncserver -geometry 1024×768 -depth 16 :1) to /etc/rc.local in order to start it every time the system starts.

  10. Thanks. Really useful guide.

  11. Very cool!

  12. Hello, This all works very well. Except after restarting my VPS (ubuntu 10.10), it will work a few times, but after restarting my vps more than 2-3 times , the vncserver stops working, and I have to re-install the whole OS again and start over. I do everything, but when i start vncserver it will say there is already one running as :0 or :1 or :2 etc. So I go to the processes and I don’t see any vnc server processes running.. I don’t know what to do :s

  13. Hello There…”Tutor”…This video tutorial is superb. It is clear and works. Thanks very much for your efforts. The issue now is that you can’t actually USE that desktop Ubuntu Machine effectively. There are 30 thousand software tools on offer for ONE CLICK install but your tutorial does not cover how to create the SUPER USER with authority to MANAGE the machine. (in other words, it’s quite a waste…to say the least.) All the best

    Vince.

  14. Hi:
Thank you, excellent video, a well step-by-step instruction. Thank you once again

  15. When you stop your instance does the VNC4 SERVER and config stay as is or are they deleted the same way that happens when you terminate the instance? 😀

  16. Skydrive and Amazon Cloud Drive both give you 5GB free.
    Mozy gives you 2GB free.

I’ve tried both Skydrive and Mozy and they have a client that runs in the background and backs up your files for you automatically.

But recently I found another provider, CX that gives you 10GBs free storage. More details here: http://thisishelpful.com/10gbs-free-online-storage.html – I’m using it now and it seems to work fine and can’t complain on 10GBs of FREE stroage!

It also has a client that runs in the background and backs up your files for you automatically.

    Hope that answers your question.

  17. I have Dropbox and use it to back up all my documents, receipts, etc… the small files stuff that I consider critical and I can’t loose. Photos and music aren’t really critical, you’d still survive but business docs are more serious… I use a 3TB WD external drive to automatically back up the rest of my two laptop drives.

Dropbox starts you with 2GB free, which is usually more than enough for documents and stuff like that, and if you start referring people it will increase, I’m at around 8GB of free space. If you send out invites to everyone on your contact list, even if they don’t register thru your link, Dropbox remembers who sent them the email last and I still get referrals from an email blast I sent out over a year ago today.

Of course, you can also always go for a paid route – here’s a good page that compares some of the best providers:
