Create a (totally free) “cloud” account at GDrive (google), Skydrive (Microsoft), or DropBox. Then upload your file to the cloud. Most of these free online storage sites allow you send links to friends so they can download the stuff. Most of them also provide encryption protection. Good luck.

There are several different ways to do this.
You can try and find a online service which allows you to upload such big files. I dont think there is any (file hosts that is).
You can do as Grandpa Mac said and use a cloud service.
You can host your own server temporerly. For example a FTP or HTTP file server. Filezilla is easy enough to use for FTP and HFS by Rejetto works well for HTTP.
You can create a torrent and hope you two can connect to eachother. If you can thats probably the best way. Because then you can send/download only when you can. As you can stop and start it as often as you want and you wont have to redo it all.
Personally i just HFS by rejetto and a FTP server for file transfers.

Can you not just put all the files on a USB device and then let him move the files over the his PC?

Go back to the original files. Perform your zip function again only this time specify an output size of say, 2 meg and that it should split it into multiple files. You can then email each one in its own email. 7-Zip is by far my preferred tool for compression/archive/storage.
The other option alluded to by earlier posters: get a free drop box account and upload it there. He can then download it at his convenience.
Speed: Your upload speed probably isn’t more than 1 mbti, which is 128 kbyte /s
12 gb is going to take a while. At 1 mbit up you are looking at some 28 hours to upload – that’s best case scenario, assuming 100% efficiency and no packet loss. That will be true no matter which method you use. Depending upon your actual connection upload speed, it could be longer or shorter. I suggest either a flash drive or using 7 Zip to create 4 gig files and putting those on DVDs.
