  5. Cloud is just a buzz word, it all depends on how you define cloud.

It’s like “wireless” is a buzz word – there are numerous wireless technologies, the devil is in the details.

Cloud can be like iCloud, which is really just online storage. It might save you money, but ultimately what Apple wants is for you to fall in love with iCloud and pay them for a chunk of online storage. In the long run it would be cheaper to purchase a backup hard drive, but the average user is to lazy or stupid to back up their music/pictures/movies etc.. Apple has made iCloud work well for Apple devices, but it doesn’t do much for the rest of us.

Cloud can also be applications that run in the network. Any “program” you use that requires a network host (example would be skype) can be made to run on what are known as virtual machines. With virtual machines (look up VMWARE as one example) your application can be made to run on multiple different computers simultaneously, it appears as one application even though its actually running on two or more physical computers – separated by a network. That does a couple of things – one it can more the application closer to where the bulk of the users are, two no single point of failure, three you can easily add/remove capacity by turning up/down virtual machines. This is huge for global companies that use programs like SAP to manage their business.

There are also “cloud” networks. These are networks that run virtually on top of the physical wires. TRILL and SPBm are examples of “cloud based” networks. These networks react when virtual machines appear and disappear in the network, they make it appear like all these VMs are on the same logical network even though they could be separated by 1000s of miles.
